Basic Troop Camping FAQ's

Q: Can I bring a cell phone?
A: Yes, you may bring a phone. Please be courteous and set the phone to vibrate and walk away from the group to take an emergency call so as not to disturb the training.

Q: Can I come late? Leave early?
A: No, participants are expected to attend the full class. If we let some folks come late and some leave early we have no idea who has what information. It also ruins our credibility with the people who have cleared their schedule to take the full training.

Q: Can I bring my child/troop?
A: No

Q: Can I bring my pet?
A: No

Q: What do I bring?
A: Dress for the weather as this is outdoor training and you will be outside. Bring a pencil and something to write on. You will also need a bandana and mess kit or unbreakable flatware, mug, bowl and plate, a water bottle and a dunk bag for cleaning your mess kit and flatware (a lingerie bag will do).

Q: Should I bring a lunch?
A: No, you will be working in patrols to cook a lunch for the group.

Q: Where are we sleeping?
A: Platform Tents

Q: What if it rains? Snows? Wind and hail?
A: Dress for the weather. If the camp is open the training will happen, but if you need to check call 781-893-6113 x.238 for a possible cancellation message.

Q: Do I have to do both parts of the training?
A: Yes, you are not a certified camper until you complete both parts of the training.

Q: How long is the training good and do I have to take it all again next time?
A: The BTC training certifies you for three years and then you can recertify using the “Basic Troop Camp Recertification Form” found in the forms section of our website.

Q: What is a platform tent?
A: you can visit the Camp and Properties section of our website to view the tents. There are wooden platforms raised off the ground with a large canvas tent attached. You will not need to pitch your own tent.

Basic Troop Camping Introduction & Basic Troop Camping Overnight
In this course experienced volunteer camp trainers will introduce you to a variety of camping skills including: dressing for the weather, safety and risk management, reserving and caring for council camp sites, fire building, and outdoor cooking. There is a $10.00 fee for this course, which covers your meal for the day. Bring a bandana or hat, mess kit or unbreakable dinnerware; you will cook your lunch as part of your training. Dress for the weather, outdoor training is held in the Out-Of-Doors! NOTE: Basic Troop Camping Introduction training is required if you want to cook, build fires or use cook stoves with the girls in your troop. Full troop camper certification is required for overnights including camping, and extended trips. On the overnight camping experience participants will put into practice the skills learned in Introduction to BTC. This overnight is for leaders who have completed the Basic Troop Camping Introduction. These courses must be taken in pairs you can’t mix and match Intro and Overnight courses.
